January 2025 Belgrade
The next two days were spent working at the Belgrade Church, where Our Serbs not only contributes by purchasing food but also provides financial support. Moral support goes without saying, and the employees were thrilled by Kathy’s visit and her helping hands, which encouraged both the workers and the attendees alike.
Kathy and board member Lynn Svilar, alongside regular workers and some of the cutest little helpers, all worked together with “all hands on deck” to pack thousands of Christmas meals for Christmas Day. Each recipient received generous portions of meat, cheese, eggs, and other meal entrées and sides, accompanied by a loaf of bread and a hot coffee or tea. Some stayed to eat and socialize, while others took their meals home to share with their families.
Clergy were ever-present, offering warm embraces and consoling words to those who came for a meal. For many, the church is not just a place for food but a refuge for the heart and soul. Icons surrounded the courtyard and adorned parts of the building, serving as a constant reminder of God’s presence. These symbols, combined with the compassionate clergy, reminded everyone that God works through those who offer help. It was heartwarming to witness people embracing one another, clergy alongside Kathy and Lynn, creating a scene of love and unity.
The food portions were incredibly generous, with every inch of the plastic food containers packed to the brim. Meals were balanced with ample protein and other food groups, ensuring recipients received nourishment and comfort. Soup kitchens like this one are vital for vulnerable populations facing food insecurity. They provide immediate access to food, meet basic needs for homeless and low-income families, and foster connections to the church and the broader community. Beyond food, they reduce waste, engage volunteers, and offer emergency relief. Emergency hygiene items were also available for those in dire situations, offering a small but meaningful way to restore dignity and hope.
President Kathy Fanslow spent her time assisting in the kitchen, packaging meals with other volunteers, and walking through the courtyard and surrounding areas where those in need had gathered. She offered sincere embraces and handshakes, along with bags filled with essential items to provide comfort and support. Her presence was a testament to the mission of Our Serbs, showing that compassion and action go hand in hand.
May God bless those who come seeking help and those who provide it. As we pray, “Christ, Who is alone our Defender: Be mindful, Lord, of the young and the old; orphans and widows; the sick and the suffering, the sorrowing and the afflicted, all captives, and the needy poor; upon them all send Your mercies, for You are the Giver of all good things.”
